There’s a quote from Eckhart Tolle that I really like,

“Most people treat the present moment as if it was an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is life itself, it is an insane way to live.”

This quote points to a certain truth about most human existence, we aim for the next moment as it was the most important goal, but of course the next moment never comes, it is always now.

Now, and the next moment are very elusive, it is always now but we live on the razor’s edge of the next moment, even if this next moment is a minute from now, it’s hard to tell it apart from now, a good example of this is waiting in line impatiently, and waiting of course it is the denying of the present moment.

This reminded me of a classic bit from Sesame Street that illustrates this point very well, we’re always here, but we want to be there, there is always here. Harry and Grover spiritual teachings point to a certain truth about the here and the now:

This clip illustrates how absurd is chasing the next moment, furry Billy now knows, There, is always Here. Recognizing it does not mean that we can’t make goals for the future, or make plans for tomorrow, it simply means that we accept that the quality of our lives is determined by how we perceive this present moment and then practice being present.
